Fall is settling in very nicely at the Wolf Cove Inn, our romantic bed and breakfast in Poland, Maine. It’s a great time to get moving and enjoy the outdoors. Mother Nature’s canvas is beginning its awesome display of vibrant foliage. It’s time for you to see it yourself. Below are the best hikes in Maine that are especially worth a visit now as they really show off autumn’s amazing colors. The hikes range in difficulty from easy to advanced. Driving distances to the trailheads range from 10 minutes to two hours from our Inn on Tripp Lake.
4 Fall Hikes In Maine
Now is a great time for a romantic getaway in Maine to explore the beauty of fall foliage season. The air is brisk, the skies cobalt blue, and the vibe invigorating. Did I mention the colors? Stunning. Gorgeous. Spectacular. Breathtaking. That’s what goes through one’s mind while taking any of these fall hikes in Maine. Without further ado, here a some of our personal favorites.
Don’t worry, there are no rattlesnakes on Rattlesnake Mountain! What you do get are some great ledge views of the foliage dancing around the many beautiful lakes, including Crescent Lake, Panther Pond and Sebago Lake. At the farthest point on the hike (it’s only just under 3 miles out and back total), you’ll even spot the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Hike details and directions can be found here. This hike has a great reward to effort ratio! And trust me, the foliage views are truly unforgettable.
This is a mostly easy hike with one moderate pitch. It’s a 10 minute drive to the Raymond Maine trailhead. The hike will take about 90 minutes round trip.
Singepole Mountain offers two paths to the summit. One is easy with a spot or two of pitch. The other is strenuous. Once at the top, the rewards are terrific. You’ll find an abandoned quarry where the pups can take a swim. The summit of Singepole Mountain offers panoramic foliage views of the Oxford Hills, White Mountains and Hall Pond.

There is a lot to discover at Bradbury Mountain State Park, including great hiking, especially for families. A variety of paths are available ranging from easy to moderate, one of which is stroller navigable. Once at the summit, enjoy the almost 360-degree views of the foliage in Maine’s farmland and open spaces. You’ll also catch views of the Atlantic on especially clear days. You’ll drive 30 minutes to Bradbury State Park in Pownal Maine. The hike will take an hour round trip.
Little Bigelow Mountain
For an adventurous full-day scenic drive and hike, I love Little Bigelow Mountain. This moderate to advanced hike offers many rewards on the way up, including fantastic views of Flagstaff Lake. Furthermore, a terrific view of Sugarloaf Mountain Ski Resort awaits you its summit. This hike is moderate to advanced on part of the Appalachian trail. It’s a 2-hour drive to Bigelow Preserve trailhead near Carrabassett Valley, Maine. The hike itself will take 3-4 hours round trip. Bring plenty of water and some energy food on this hike. We can provide a backpack and trekking poles for this adventure on a first come – first serve basis.
