Brunswick is a college town, home of Bowdoin College, one of Maine’s “Ivies”. The lovely campus hosts historic homes and interesting museums to haunt. Once home to wealthy shipbuilders, Brunswick has maintained that small town feel with New England charm. Its vibrant downtown district sports lively cafes and cool shops to browse, and the arts and entertainment offerings are impressive for a small college town.

1. Art and History in Brunswick
No matter which route you take to get to Brunswick, you’ll likely end up on busy Route 1. Don’t be put off by the commercial feel of the road. Venture off into the side streets We recommend you start your day strolling the campus of Bowdoin and visiting some of its noteworthy museums and historic homes.

2. Shop Historic “Maine” Street
Second on our list is shopping. Once you’ve had your fill of art and history, meander downtown to Maine Street where window shopping is a favorite past time. Maybe you’re in the mood for a scoop of gelato at Gelato Fiasco, or a frosty craft beer at Moderation Brewing Company. If you’re in the market for antiques, feast your eyes on the collection at Cabot Mills Antiques. This multi-dealer emporium has a reputation for quality period pieces and vintage finds.
3. Outdoor Adventure Options on the Water
Brunswick is more than just home to Bowdoin College, however. There’s adventure afoot for those who desire a more outdoor experience. Join Master Maine Guide, Alice Bean Andrenyak, on a wild canoe or kayak trip, bird and wildlife watch, or a mindful afternoon of forest bathing. Wet a line with the Maine Bass Fishing Guide Service, for a chance to catch smallmouth bass on one of Maine’s scenic lakes or rivers. It’s an outing fit for anglers of all skills and abilities.
4. Hike or Bike Rivers and Estuaries
For a more relaxed adventure, head over to the Hamilton Audubon Sanctuary in nearby West Bath. Stroll the 2.5-mile trail network observing osprey and shorebirds in their natural environment. It’s the perfect spot for a few hours of quiet beauty on foot. During the colder months, you can cross-country skis or snowshoe here. The Androscoggin Bicycle and Pedestrian Path is another great option on foot or two wheels. This paved 2.5-mile path along the Androscoggin River features 2 lanes, one for pedestrians and one for those on bikes. Several stone benches along the way invite you to pause and take in the views.
5. Brunswick Golf Club
If you’re a golfer you’ll want to tee up at the Brunswick Golf Club. Rich in golf history and considered the “hub of golf in Maine”, this hometown golf course features challenging holes and immaculate greens. With 18 championship holes and tree-lined fairways, a day on the links in Brunswick might be just what the doctor ordered.
6. Dolphin Marina and Restaurant
When it’s time to move on, treat yourselves to some delicious Maine seafood with a side trip down Route 123 to Harpswell. Here you’ll find the Dolphin Marina and Restaurant at the tip of the peninsula overlooking Pott’s Harbor and Casco Bay. The chowdah, as we’ve said before, is outstanding, as is the blackened haddock sandwich. But don’t take our word for it. Go try it yourselves. The views are spectacular and well-worth the drive.
7. Turn Your Day Trip into an Overnight Getaway
Last but certainly not least on our list of 7 reasons to take a day trip to Brunswick, ME is an overnight stay at Wolf Cove Inn. After a day of exploring charming Brunswick, you’ll return to the Inn and amble down to the fire pit with your favorite cocktail, glass of wine, or craft beer. It’s time to call it a night. Watch the sunset over Tripp Lake, listen to the call of the loons, and take a few minutes to reflect on today’s adventure to Brunswick.
