Are you looking for a unique romantic dining experience that even makes Cupid proud? The Wolf Cove Inn in Poland Maine now offers such an experience. Our Ultimate Romance Dinner is gourmet 4-course dining served in our newly christened Boathouse Bistro right on Tripp Lake. If you are in love, add this to your bucket list for, like, soon.
Romantic Dining On Tripp Lake
Towards the end of last season, Sue and I talked about how we could make your New England romantic getaways even more special. We were walking the property one November afternoon and the lightbulb went off in Sue’s head. She looked at the boathouse right on the lake and said “what if we offered dinner in the boathouse?” Brilliant! As a result, that day the Boathouse Bistro, home of the Ultimate Romance Dinner, was born.
The Boathouse Bistro
The boathouse at the Wolf Cove Inn is right on Tripp Lake and features two levels. The upper level has long been a favorite spot for lovers to enjoy the breathtaking sunsets over the lake. The lower level contains all the paddling and life safety gear for enjoying a day of canoeing, kayaking and rowing.
This past spring, the boathouse upper level transformed into the Boathouse Bistro. The building goes back many years and exudes a rustic vibe. Therefore, we decided that rather than a big makeover, we would embrace the rustic charm. Consequently, out went a rocking chair. In came a table and chairs for two, a bit of decor and some mood lighting for the railings.
Here, one lucky couple per evening will dine together, alone. They will enjoy a wonderful multi-course dinner that includes wine pairing with each course.
The Ultimate Romance Dinner
The Wolf Cove Inn is known for the Maine comfort breakfasts served to guests of the inn each morning. Sue and I now extend our offerings with the Ultimate Romance Dinner. Since the Bistro is open air, the dinners are offered from late spring through fall. Working in advance with Chef Roy (that’s me!), the couple selects a main entrée for their romantic dining. Furthermore they also let me know about things they like and food to avoid. My staff and I will then prepare a multi-course menu around that entrée.
Some couples prefer being surprised with the rest of the menu. Others want the details ahead of time to savor the build up. We are happy to work either way.
The Boathouse Bistro offers flexibility in the time the couple is seated. Here’s a tip. You want the entree served around sunset since sunsets on Tripp Lake are often spectacular. Sunset views from the Boathouse Bistro are terrific.
We offer a wide variety of entrée options for an evening of romantic dining. First of all, there are entrees “from the air” including Pan Seared Duck Breast With Port-Cherry Wine Sauce. Another offering “from the sea” includes Commodore’s Baked Stuffed Lobster that will knock your socks off. In addition, “on the ground” offerings include Herb Coated Rack Of Lamb With Red Wine Reduction. And “from the ground” offerings (so as to delight vegetarians) include Roasted Vegetables With Basil And Feta Polenta.
A Recent Menu For Romantic Dining
By way of example, I present a recent menu prepared at our romantic Maine inn and served in the Boathouse Bistro. Pictured above is the entrée. Below you will find photos of the appetizer and side dish served that evening.

And The Perfect Ending …
Two things happen towards the end of most romantic dinners. One – the wait staff starts clearing things out right after you finish eating your last course. They are signaling that it’s time for you to leave. They need to get the next reservation to the table. Two – one of you stops enjoying the generous wine pours because, well, someone has to drive home.
Neither of those two things happen when dining at the Boathouse Bistro. First, no wait staff is standing by for you to put that last bite of dessert away. No other guests are waiting that evening. Rather, Sue delivers your dessert and says “take your time – we’ll clean up in the morning”. Second, there is no driving involved to get home. Your romantic room is mere steps away. So please, drink responsibly but enjoy the wine to your heart’s content.
